embarassed to ask....menu questions

ok so some may think this is a prank post but i assure you its not.

we have steaks a plenty here in the uk but no prime rib (to my knowledge).so can someone please explain the difference between a steak and prime rib please.

i ask this on the vegas forum because thats where i see prime rib advertised the most (when we were in vegas).

also on the us menu%26#39;s what are entree%26#39;s ? my guess is its what we brits call main course.here on our menu%26#39;s we have starters, main course and dessert.

so i assume its the same as the us appetizers,entree%26#39;s etc.i am i correct or am i just making myself look an even bigger plonker!

thanks to all who give me a sensible reply

No dumb questions

Entree = main course

Instead of trying to explain it I%26#39;ll just link you for Wikipedia%26#39;s expertise. Great pic of a slice of prime rib. Styeaks on the other hand vary greatly. My personal favorite in the ribeye.

Hi

If you have not eaten in the US before, let me just let you know that for most Brits the portions are way too big. Do not order appertizers, at least for your first meal until you see just how much food you will be given for your entree.

Another strange (well to us) custom is if your meal comes with a salad, you will be given that first to eat, it does not come with the meal it comes before!

The Rib-Eye is cut from the roast that sits at the top of the rib primal. As a roast is known as a standing rib roast or, more commonly, Prime Rib (though technically only if it is prime grade beef). The Rib-Eye is a boneless cut. When the bone is attached it is called a Rib Steak.

No such thing as a stupid question. As a fellow brit ill help you out.

Prime rib is as far as im aware just beef on the bone which is carved and served. Someone more profficient will tell you the actual cut etc.

Your guess about entree%26#39;s is right-its main course to us.

In the same vain of no question is stupid-i was just thinking having read it somewhere-what the hell is a mimosa-keep seeing people talking about them on this msg board so i just googled it-its Bucks Fizz to us. You live and learn :-)

Clivesmith- weve eaten in the US loads of times but got caught out at the CC steakhouse last year. We both had starters an sitting looking forward to a nice steak when this bush lands in front of us. Was a fantastic salad but we were confused as to wether it should be with our main course or not. We waited a few minutes to see if the steak came wandering round the corner but it didnt so we got the feeling we were supposed to eat the greenery before getting to the main event. As i said, lovely sald but its suprising how it can fill you-struggle (but won) with the steak.

None of this is a complaint btw- was a fantastic meal with great service.

Hi

Bikerbear, I%26#39;m glad we are not the only ones this has happened too, lol.

The other thing we are not used too is the huge selection of types of potates they insist you have with eveything. I ordered a BLT and the waiter wanted to know what potates I wanted with them and I said none, I thought he was going to cry. I then had another waiter come over and check, no fries? I repeated no. So a third was sent over and offered a cup of fruit in place of the fries, so I just took them to keep the peace!

lol Clive!

brian...prime rib is ribeye...sometimes bone in...sometimes not. Go to your local butcher and ask him to show you bone in ribeye....delicious when slow roasted.

appetizer in the usa id entree/starter for us

entree in USA is main course for us

Brian, most of the explanations you have received are overly complicated.

Simple Explanation:

Prime Rib is a very thick slice of roast beef.

Here%26#39;s my take on the ';entree'; deal:

The ';entree'; is the primary protein of the meal.

That being said, when I go out to a nice place, I prefer something more classic. I still have problems with fish as an ';entree.'; Fish is not an entree. It is a fish course, which precedes the main course.

With regard to ordering appetizers: It depends on where you go. I have not looked at the menus, but if you go to some of the higher end places (I know Charlie Trotter%26#39;s from Chicago), of course you should order appetizers. The idea is to build a progression.

Here is my strategy: Build a meal from light to heavy and if the portions are too big, stop. Don%26#39;t feel compelled to finish each course.
