So many have been kind enough to offer ideas, opinions and the like. Well now I think we have a game plan, so let me put it up there for you all and get some additional input, ideas, and well anything you can suggest for us:)
We will be arriving in Las Vegas on 02 May, and staying for two nights. We got to get our Fremont Street Drunk on if you know what I mean.
We intend on starting the journey from there on Sunday morning to visit Primm %26amp; Jean, onto Pahrump, then to Tonopah (Any Ideas).
Maybe staying the night in Tonopah, then off to Hawthorne, follwed by Yerington and then Gardnerville/Miden. Not sure if we will plan to stay there for the night yet, so if you have any reccomendations, they would be greatly appreciated.
Now, it gets a little tricky - Looking at the maps of the area, is Carson City to be visited first, or should Tahoe be the goal?
Anyway, from Gardnerville/Miden which should be Monday night, we will have until Sat. to be at the Reno Airport at 10:00am for our flight home.
We love the idea of staying a day or two in Tahoe, the same in Reno, plus maybe visiting Fallon, Winnimucca, Lovelock and Gerlock.
I understand this is one heck of a trip, but no less then our normal pace in Vegas.
Any places of interested to be checked out on this journey of note? Things to Do?
Thanks In Advance:)
Keith
An Update To :A Reno Primmer if you Would be so Kind:)Check out the Carson Valley Inn located at Miden. A nice small casino/hotel. i personally love the Carson Valle, so green %26amp; pretty %26amp;but a short drive to Carson City/Virgina City %26amp; Tahoe You can do a circle Tahoe ( the back way) to Carson City /Virgina City back to Miden.
An Update To :A Reno Primmer if you Would be so Kind:)Wow! What a plan! You MUST give us a trip report in detail!
If you have not been to Gardnerville/Minden before, My opinion is that this is a featureless area. It serves as an alternate route to get from SLT to Carson City, via 207 (Kingsbury Grade). That%26#39;s all.
Carson City: Nevada State Museum. That%26#39;s about it. Some say the railway museum. We have driven past it, without even thinking of stopping, many times.
Lake Tahoe, with a paddlewheel tour of the lake is much better time spent.
I would spend time at Lake Tahoe first, taking hwy 207 at Gardnerville into Stateline. Upon leaving, take US 50 over to Carson City, visiting the museum, then on to Virginia City, and from there on into Reno.
We toured Lake Pyramid on the east side (Gerlock). I think it would have been more scenic if we had toured the west side of the lake. Next time we will.
I will be looking for your TR the middle of May!
I agree with StateRef in taking 207 from Gardnerville up to Tahoe and then coming back down 50 into Carson City-that would be organized and you wouldn%26#39;t miss much of anything by going that way vs. taking 395 through the Carson Valley. EXCEPT...Genoa is a really neat little town nestled at the base of the Sierras-lots of little antique shops and curio shops; it claims itself to be the oldest town in Nevada. That would be an easy stop before you head up 207 into Tahoe.
I worked in Minden for many years...it%26#39;s a very quaint town but not a lot for tourists to do there. I think there is a museum right on the border of Minden/Gardnerville, but I%26#39;ve never been in it. The Carson Valley Inn (already mentioned by previous posters) is the nicest casino in that area, but if you%26#39;re heading into Reno and have already been in Vegas I don%26#39;t know that it%26#39;ll be of that much interest to you. If you like Mexican food, stop at Francisco%26#39;s in Minden...the tacos Francisco are superb :)! Also good is Russell%26#39;s Mercantile-it%26#39;s a very small sandwich/salad place in Minden and their food is excellent with homemade bread you can buy.
My husband and I have discussed taking a little venture out east to visit some of the other towns you mentioned, so I%26#39;m curious to hear about those areas once you%26#39;re back!
Thanks for the fast replies, and the excellant advice.
We have a pretty good idea of what we want to do, but both not really wanting to be ';Slaves to a Clock'; are always interested in doing those little ';Out of the Way'; things.
The one reply mentioning a little town with antique stores is now on our ';Must Do'; list :)
For you who have not read the first incarnation of this thread, a quick reminder of ';US';: We are both in our mid forties, love the casino scene with me being a habitual Chip and Gaming Token Collector (But that said, I always play for my chips/Gaming tokens. In my eyes, it%26#39;s the honest way ). Were not big ';Foodies'; but enjoy a great meal. Both are card carrying carnivores. We just simply enjoy the adventure shared, and take pleasure in the love we share.
Again Thanks for Your Input In Advance :)

Hmmm... Tonopah to Hawthorne. (NOTE: I can%26#39;t think about that run without continuing to Amargosa Valley, which is VERY long and virtually uneventful)
In a word: desolate. Be warned, as there%26#39;s not much in between. Services are confined to the main towns, maybe to Mina as well. I%26#39;m still debating the scenic value of Walker Lake by Hawthorne... opinions probably vary.
Good news: %26#39;tis almost a shock to get caught in traffic on that route.
Pouder - Great Stuff :)
As we really don%26#39;t expect there will be much ';Excitment'; between Parhump and Tonopah. we expect even less to Hawthorne.
Short of flying, it appears this is about the next best way to go, that and I really look forward to visiting the casino%26#39;s in both Tonopah and Hawthorne. My hope to earn a few chips and maybe a token, but if not, we can say we did it:)
Any ideas on things to check out on this run?
Thanks in Advance :)
Keith
